The Social Work Registry provides a repository for social workers' credential information while serving as a verification source for social work licensing boards.  This is a great resource for social workers who want to become licensed in various jurisdictions.  The Registry lets one establish a permanent file containing primary source records important to one's social work career.  At one's request, this information can be transmitted to any regulatory board to which you may apply for licensure.  For more information go to:  www.aswb.org/registry.shtml

National Network of mental health professionals are providing free mental health services to the U.S. Troops and families affected by the current military conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.  Give an Hour is a nonprofit organization that has established a national network of mental health professionals in all 50 states, Washington, DC, Guam and Puerto Rico.  Nearly 5,000 professionals have registered to participate in this critical effort.  These licensed mental health professionals will give an hour of their time each week to provide free mental health services to military personnel and their families.  In addition to providing direct counseling services, Give an Hour volunteers are working to educate the public and the military community and to reduce stigma so often associated with mental health.  This organization was founded by Dr. Barbara Van Dahlen, a Washington, DC area psychologist.  To locate a provider, simply visit www.giveanhour.org and use the zip code search.  If there is not a provider in your area, contact info@giveanhour.org and a provider will be located for you.

Social Workers may have their educational debt forgiven . . .

The U.S. Department of Education has created a new call center for borrowers to obtain information about the College Cost Reduction Act of 2007 (H.R. 2669). The number for the Federal Student Aid Information Center is (800) 433-3243. The law forgives outstanding education debt for those persons that meet the eligibility requirements. Those that would benefit are employees that have made 120 monthly payments on their loans while serving full-time in social work in public child or family service agencies, government, nonprofit, military, education, and others areas. The loan forgiveness provisions became effective on October 1, 2007. It is important to note that payments made after October 1, 2007 on an existing loan can count towards the 120 payments if the loan meets certain criteria.

Houston/Dallas coordinator, Mark Akerlund co-authored with University of Houston professor, Monit Cheung the article titled, "Teaching beyond the deficit model: Gay and Lesbian issues among African Americans, Latinos, and Asian Americans."  The article appeared in the Journal of Social Work Education.

National Association of Social Workers(NASW)
Office of Ethics and Professional Review(OEPR)
Ethics Consultation
As a service to members, the OEPR provides ethics consultations for current NASW members. Ethic consultations are a resource for members who are experiencing an ethical dilemma. We do not provide advice or tell members what to do. However, we do guide them through the Code and point them to the areas of the Code that address their concerns. We provide dialogue and considerations that allow members to make ethical decisions. We may also refer members to the appropriate areas if their questions do not appear to be related to ethics but are more related to legal issues or standards of practice.
