Conference Summary

This 4 Ethics CEU workshop will provide an overview of technology, including social media, and ethical dilemmas in clinical social work. We will review how to use Barsky’s relational ethical decision-making framework to ethical dilemmas. There will be a specific focus on the role of technology in social work practice, including use of technology by clients, between clients and social workers, social work agencies, and between social work professionals. We will discuss the 19 changes to the 2018 NASW Code of Ethics, with an emphasis on the changes related to technology, and the NASW Technology Practice Standards.



Invited Presenter

Dr. Jonathan Singer is associate professor of social work at Loyola University Chicago, President of the American Association of Suicidology, and coauthor of Suicide in Schools: A Practitioner's Guide to Multi-level Prevention, Assessment, Intervention, and Postvention.

For the past 23 years, Dr. Singer has been a community mental health clinician, educator and researcher, much of that time providing crisis services to suicidal youth and their families. His clinical and research interests focus on interventions for suicidal and cyberbullied youth; service access and service utilization; and use of technology in education and clinical practice. He has given hundreds of presentations to the U.S. Military, community mental health agencies, school districts, and national professional organizations on topics ranging from youth suicide and cyberbullying to ethics, mental health, technology, social media, and adolescent development. He is certified in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Attachment-based Family Therapy (ABFT) for depressed and suicidal youth, and received training from Insoo Kim Berg on Solution-Focused Therapy. He is the author of over 60 publications. His research has been featured in national and international media outlets like NPR, Fox, Time Magazine, and The Guardian. He is a founding member of #SPSM, an online suicide prevention social media community; the Treasurer for the international organization Human Services Information Technology Association; and co-lead for the Social Work Grand Challenge initiative "Harness Technology for Social Good."

He is the founder and host of the award winning Social Work Podcast (www.socialworkpodcast.com), the first podcast by and for social workers. The Social Work Podcast has over 30,000 followers on social media and a million podcast episode downloads per year. Objectives

1. Participants will consider making changes to their policies and procedures to attend more to ethical

         concerns regarding the use of technology in social work practice.

2. Participants will identify the ethical dilemmas that may arise from engaging in personal and professional

         activities on the Internet, including social media

3. Participants will describe similarities and differences between online and offline ethical dilemmas

4. Participants will recognize the possibilities and limitations of online therapy

5. Participants will learn to apply ethical decision-making frameworks to technology-informed dilemmas

6. Participants will list three tech-related changes to the 2018 NASW Code of Ethics.

This program is also approved for 4 Ethics CE credits for professional workshops for marriage & family therapists (Section 48.36) and professional counselors (Section 49.36).

FOR NEW JERSEY SOCIAL WORKERS: This program is approved for 4 ethics credits. Attendance at programs or courses given at state and national social work association conferences, where the criteria for membership is an academic degree in social work, are a valid source of continuing education credit (N.J.A.C. 13:44G-6.4(c)4).

FOR DELAWARE SOCIAL WORKERS: Presenter(s) have a minimum of 2 (two) years of practical application and/or research experience pertaining to the subject matter of this presentation. Please consult section 7.2.5 of the rules of the Board of Clinical Social Work Examiners to determine if this course is in conformance with state regulations.
