Play is the language of children. Play is what fosters learning and development, helps children develop roles for survival, creates positive connections and relieves stress. But although almost 80 percent of social workers regularly work with children and adolescents, over half do not consider it their practice area and have no training in play and related therapies.

At this workshop, Dr. Elisabeth (Beth) Counselman-Carpenter (bio), LCSW, a full-time lecturer in clinical practice at Columbia School of Social Work, will lead participants in developing an understanding of advanced expressive arts and play therapy techniques with a focus on post-traumatic play. She will focus on how to identify when a child has been traumatized and what techniques to use in treating traumatized children and their families, including sandtray therapy.

Dr. Counselman-Carpenter teaches courses on clinical interventions, evaluation, and the application of risk and resilience theories and research to at-risk populations. In addition to her role as educator, she has her own private practice, providing individual, group, and family therapy for children, adolescents, and adults.
